There is more and more legislation on the subject of “psychological harassment in the workplace”. A few countries in Europe are subject to this new legislation already. (In France it is called Harcèlement moral). It became part of Québec’s Labor standards in June 2004. It will likely become law in other Canadian provinces in the near future. It is a question of time for others.
Having this type of legislation is the inevitable “next generation” requirement to strongly encourage the enhancement of quality of life in the workplace. People in the career management, coaching / mentoring professions will have to understand fully what is meant by Psychological Harassment, as well as what it is not, to be able to guide and support managers when dealing with issues related to this sensitive topic.
A job mismatch is often at the root of a performance problem that in turn, becomes an attitudinal problem on the part of the employee. Managers, out of frustration, deal with these emotionally charged situations by becoming authoritative and directive. The person perceives this approach as being harassment, having a negative effect on his/her psychological stability.
In certain cases, the issue has been acknowledged, by the courts as being a work- related health and safety issue (workplace hazard, for instance).
As Psychological Harassment is mostly a question of perception, awareness on the matter is of great importance for all.
